Let's Talk Cyber Security

"Identity thieves are using the same networks as you, and they're not interested in your music. They're seeking access to your financial information." ~ CBS consumer correspondent Susan Koeppen reporting on the Early Show.
That is a scary statement to hear for many people who are not aware of the many risks inherent in having peer-to-peer software, social networking Web sites, or home area networks. It leaves many wondering "just how secure am I?" It's a good question to ask yourself, and it is something we take very seriously at simpleHome.
Whether we are designing a solution for your home or your business, the 3 most important factors we consider in order to ensure your cyber security are: 1. Network Design 2. Networking Product Selection 3. Device Authentication
The first place to start with cyber security is with a properly designed network. A lot of potential issues can be mitigated if you do your homework upfront.
Secondly, a secure network is dependent on the equipment itself. There are great benefits to using commercial-grade networking equipment over the off-the-shelf consumer grade products. In addition to significantly superior security provisions, the better equipment will result in less down-time.
Finally, every device that resides on the network has to be secured with a strong username & password combination using a non-standard username. Using passwords that are not easily broken by common hacking software is important. Passwords that are not dictionary words, contain both letters and numbers and non-standard characters, such as $ or #, can greatly reduce your network vulnerabilities. |
